BREAKING! Bird flu hits Kano


The Kano state government on Thursday, December 15 announced a resurfacing of Avian Influenza popularly referred to as bird flu in the state.

The state’s director of veterinary services at the ministry of agriculture and natural resources Shehu Bawa said the fresh outbreak was recorded at a poultry farm in Kano .

Bawa said the affected poultry has been emptied and measure already put in place by the state government to contain the spread of the disease.

“The state government has taken proactive measures to contain the spread of the disease to other farms within the state,” Bawa state.

Listing measure used to tackle the outbreak, Bawa said, the affected farm has been thoroughly disinfected and routine surveillance conducted in the other farms in the state.

He also called on poultry farmers to report any suspected outbreak of the disease in the farms to the relevant authorities, adding that, this will enable the state government make prompt response on the matter.

“I am using this opportunity to advise farmers to immediately report any outbreak of the disease to enable government take prompt response,” he said.

Meanwhile, Bawa called on the government to devise an effective measure for supervision of abattoirs in Kano state.

He decried the lack of veterinarians in these abattoirs for animal inspection before slaughtering.

Bawa said: “With the exception of the two abattoirs at Kofar Mazugal and Bachirawa, others have no meat Inspectors.”

“So, there is need to have veterinarians to supervise abattoirs in each of the 44 Local Government Areas of the state,” he said.
