From the Mishai at Main gate to the sweet “ebelebo” at Basement, Uniben holds great memories for many alumni. Let’s not forget how eventful off-campus life in Ekosodin, BDPA and Osasogie was.
Everyone knows Warri is the best place where one can hear authentic pidgin English, followed closely by Benin. This is why many University of Benin Alumni tend to have colourful slangs and phrases in their pidgin when they leave.
If you’re a Uniben alumnus, then you’d definitely know these slangs:
1. Garg
While the rest of the Nigeria has Slay queen and pepper dem gang, “garg” was the Benin equivalent of dressed to kill.
2. Arrow
If you have never had the opportunity to travel the tiny sliver of walkway between Halls 2 and 3, then Arrow is the snarky commentary Hall 3 boys throw at passerbys and girls in the Hall 2 hostel who happen to be outside at the time.
3. Show
The two words every Uniben student never wanted to hear strung together and thrown in your direction was “ess, show” especially in Ekosodin. Show implies come over here and let’s have a conversation whereby the person telling you to show does all the talking while you hold up the listening end of the conversation.
4. Gbess
If there is ever a word to describe the flight response when something awful is going down, it would be Gbess.
5. Sharperly
Quickly is the younger, slower brother of Sharperly. Sharperly is the kind of fast that quickly aspires to be.
6. Change am
Have you ever gone ballistic on someone when they thought you were calm and collected? What you did then was to change it (change am) for that person.
7. Lock up
Lock up is our very own Uniben way of saying forget it or let it go.
Life in Uniben was sweet! Greatest UNIBEN!!!
And it won't be complete if we don't mention "HALL 4 Beans"... For the love of beans.
