Buhari Declares June 12 Democracy Day, Honours Abiola; Nigerians React

Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday announced that Democracy Day will henceforth be celebrated on June 12.

“Dear Nigerians, I am delighted to announce that, after due consultations, the Federal Government has decided that henceforth, June 12 will be celebrated as Democracy Day.

“We have also decided to award posthumously the highest Honour in the land, GCFR, to the late Chief MKO Abiola,” he said.

The declaration was to honour MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the acclaimed June 12, 1993 election, who was also awarded a post-humors title of Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR).

Many Nigerians have taken to Twitter to commend the President for making the historic move which past presidents, including Olusegun Obasanjo, failed to do.

Some, however, think the declaration is a way to appease the South West region and win their hearts ahead of the 2019 election.
