Ruth Kamande, Beauty Queen Sentenced To Death In Kenya

Nairobi High Court Judge Jessie Lessit has sentenced Ruth Kamande to death for killing her boyfriend, Farid Mohammed in Bururburu estate in 2015.

The Judge sentenced Kamande who was in 2016 crowned 'Miss Lang'ata women prison beauty queen' to death after finding her guilty of murder.

In the ruling on Thursday, Lessit said Kamande had not shown remorse after stabbing the deceased 25 times.

Lessit ruled that the prosecution had proven beyond all reasonable doubt that Kamande intentionally killed her boyfriend.

"The prosecution in its evidence to this court clearly demonstrated that the accused person committed the offense (murder)," Lessit ruled.

"The stabs that killed the deceased (Farid Mohamed) were not done at ago an indication that the murder was intentional," she added.

Justice Lessit dismissed Kamande's allegations that she was acting in self-defense after the deceased tried to rape her.

The Judge said that a doctor’s report presented in court during the trial ruled out rape.

In her mitigation earlier, Kamande had pleaded with the court for leniency.

Kamande had told the court that she was remorseful and that she had reformed after being remanded at the Lang’ata Women since 2015.

She also told the court that she has been raised by a single parent and that her mother would suffer should the court sentence her to death or life imprisonment.

Kamande has 14 days to appeal the High court judgment.
